Free Recipes
The Free Recipes on this site are the kind of old fashioned good cooking that your Grandmother used to make. Select from the free recipes below & start cooking and enjoying!
If you yearn for “the good-old days” and miss your grandmother’s cooking, then this is the site for you. We have left the language unchanged because part of the fun is reading the old advice
(Such as, “it is best to kill the fowl the night before”). In most cases, you should have no trouble translating into more current vernacular. (i.e. “Purchase chicken breast from the grocery store!”)
Oven temperatures are rarely mentioned in these Free Recipes, but here are some guidelines:
“Very slow oven” 250-300 degrees Fahrenheit “Slow oven” 300-350 degrees Fahrenheit “Moderate oven” 350-400 degrees Fahrenheit “Hot oven” 400-450 degrees Fahrenheit “Very hot oven” 450-500 degrees Fahrenheit
We have collected as many recipes as we can find from the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Many come from out-of print books. Others are family favorites passed down through the years. All of them were created before the advent of electric ovens and microwaves!
These are recipes that you can’t find anywhere else—the books are out of publication and frankly, they aren’t hot-selling recipes because most of them will have to be adapted for today’s kitchens.
The recipes are special to us and we hope you will enjoy creating the same meals that families enjoyed a century ago.
All across Texas, farmers are providing vegetables, fruits, flowers, Christmas trees and many other farm fresh products that you can go out and get right there fresh from the farm. It makes a great family outing.
Many also provide free recipes, great ideas for turning that fresh produce into an outstanding dinner experience.
“We just appreciate so much people coming to get this food, and the relationships we’ve formed with our customers are unbelievable,” Carol Ann Sayle, owner of Boggy Creek Farm, says. “They like to come out and walk the farm, see what's Growing, so that they understand what’s in season. They know that if you eat locally, that you will have a better chance of getting fresh food, and freshness equals nutrition.”
